Overview — Three Countries, Three Systems

World Cup 2026 is uniquely complex from an entry requirements perspective. For the first time, the tournament spans three countries — the USA, Canada, and Mexico — each with its own distinct visa and entry regime. Depending on where your team is drawn in the group stage and how far they advance, you could need documents for all three.

Here's the high level:

  • USA — 42 countries qualify for ESTA (Visa Waiver Program). All others need a B-2 tourist visa. The USA hosts 11 venues including the Final at MetLife Stadium.
  • Canada — Most VWP-country citizens can use a Canada eTA. US citizens need neither. Some nationalities need a full Canadian visa. Canada hosts 2 venues: Vancouver and Toronto.
  • Mexico — Visa-free for citizens of most countries. Mexico hosts 3 venues: Mexico City (Azteca), Guadalajara, and Monterrey.

Most fans will need to check requirements for all three countries based on their team's potential bracket path. Use Fanpath's tournament simulator to see which countries your team is most likely to play in.

USA Entry Requirements

The USA is the primary host, with 11 stadiums hosting the majority of matches including the Final. Entry to the USA requires either ESTA or a B-2 tourist visa depending on your nationality.

Visa Waiver Program (ESTA)

Citizens of the 42 countries on the US Visa Waiver Program can apply for ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) online at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Cost: $21. Approval is usually within 72 hours. ESTA covers multiple entries and is valid for 2 years. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned travel dates.

B-2 Tourist Visa (Non-VWP Countries)

Citizens of countries not on the Visa Waiver Program must apply for a B-2 tourist visa at a US embassy or consulate in their home country. Allow a minimum of 8–12 weeks from application to approval — but this does not include the time to get an interview appointment. In some countries, appointment wait times currently exceed 12 months. Check current wait times immediately at travel.state.gov.

This is not an exhaustive list. Always verify your country's current VWP status at travel.state.gov.

Canada Entry Requirements

Canada hosts two World Cup venues: BC Place in Vancouver and BMO Field in Toronto. Vancouver is particularly notable as a potential group stage and knockout round city with excellent connections to US cities.

Canada eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

Most citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries also qualify for Canada's eTA. Cost: CAD$7. Apply online at canada.ca. Approval is typically within minutes. The eTA is linked to your passport and valid for 5 years or until your passport expires.

US Citizens

US citizens do not need an eTA to enter Canada. A valid US passport is sufficient.

Full Canadian Visa

Some nationalities require a full Canadian temporary resident visa rather than an eTA. Check the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) requirements for your specific country at canada.ca. Canadian visa processing times vary — apply well in advance.

Mexico Entry Requirements

Mexico hosts three stadiums: Estadio Azteca (Mexico City), Estadio Akron (Guadalajara), and Estadio BBVA (Monterrey). Mexico's three cities are also the most affordable World Cup host locations — making entry requirements an important factor for budget-conscious fans.

Visa-Free Entry

Mexico is visa-free for citizens of most countries, including: USA, UK, EU nations, Australia, Japan, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and most of Latin America. Citizens of these countries can stay for up to 180 days as tourists.

Mexico Tourist Card (FMM)

All visitors receive a Mexico tourist card (Forma Migratoria Multiple / FMM) on arrival or distributed on the plane. Keep this document safe — you must surrender it when departing Mexico. Losing it can cause complications and fees at the airport on departure.

Mexico Visa Required

Citizens of India, China, and some African and Middle Eastern nations need a Mexican tourist visa. Apply at a Mexican consulate or embassy in your home country well in advance. Processing times vary by country.

Multi-Country Fans — Planning for Multiple Entry Documents

If your team is drawn in a group stage city in one country but could advance to knockout rounds in another, you may need entry documents for multiple countries. This is one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of World Cup 2026 planning.

Example: An Indian fan whose team plays group stage matches in Guadalajara (Mexico) but could advance to the Round of 32 in Dallas (USA) or the Round of 16 in Toronto (Canada) would need: Mexican tourist visa + US B-2 visa + Canada eTA or visa. All three require separate applications with separate timelines.

Use Fanpath's tournament simulator to map which countries your team is most likely to play in at each stage. Select your team and the simulator shows all possible bracket paths and the probability of playing in each country. Use this to decide which visa applications are worth prioritizing.

Even fans from VWP countries should plan carefully: having ESTA approved does not mean you're automatically prepared for Canadian or Mexican entry requirements, which require separate applications.

Timing — When to Apply

The cardinal rule: apply as early as possible. Entry document processing is the aspect of World Cup 2026 planning most fans leave too late.

World Cup 2026 Visa Guide — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa for USA for World Cup 2026?

It depends on your nationality. Citizens of 42 Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries — including the UK, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, South Korea, and most EU nations — can enter the USA with ESTA ($21, approved online, usually within 72 hours). Citizens of all other countries need a B-2 tourist visa, applied for at a US embassy or consulate. Allow 8–12 weeks minimum for processing, and check appointment availability immediately — some countries have 12+ month waits.

Do I need a visa for Canada for World Cup 2026?

Most citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries also qualify for Canada's eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization), which costs CAD$7 and is typically approved within minutes online. US citizens do not need an eTA. Some nationalities require a full Canadian visa — check the IRCC website for your specific country's requirements at canada.ca.

Do I need a visa for Mexico for World Cup 2026?

Mexico is visa-free for citizens of most countries, including the USA, UK, EU nations, Australia, Japan, Brazil, and Argentina. Citizens of India, China, and some African nations need a Mexican tourist visa applied for at a Mexican consulate. All visitors receive a Mexico tourist card (FMM) on arrival or on the plane — keep it safe as you'll need to surrender it when leaving.

What is ESTA and do I qualify?

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is the USA's online pre-travel authorization for citizens of the 42 Visa Waiver Program countries. It costs $21, is applied for at esta.cbp.dhs.gov, and is typically approved within 72 hours. ESTA covers multiple entries to the USA and is valid for 2 years from approval. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. VWP countries include the UK, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, South Korea, and most EU nations.

How long does a US visa take to get?

A US B-2 tourist visa typically takes 8–12 weeks from interview to approval. But this doesn't include the wait for an interview appointment at a US embassy or consulate — in many countries, appointment wait times are 6–12+ months. Check current wait times at travel.state.gov immediately and apply as soon as possible.

Can I enter multiple World Cup countries on one visa?

No — the USA, Canada, and Mexico each have separate entry requirements. ESTA covers the USA only; Canada eTA covers Canada only; Mexico has its own visa regime. If your team could play in both the USA and Mexico, you need to meet both countries' entry requirements separately. Use Fanpath's tournament simulator to identify which countries your team is likely to play in so you know which documents to prioritize.
